Primitive Skills

What makes Ozark Mountain Preparedness, LLC different than other survival schools?

Our instructors are professional educators with decades of experience living in the field.  We have a broad knowledge base of wilderness living skills due to years of intensive training and extended expeditions in places such as Alaska, the Desert Southwest, Southern Appalachians, and a few places abroad.

Our course size never exceeds 6 students.  This is to ensure that every student receives the highest quality training possible with the personal instruction they deserve. We hope to develop a relationship with each and every student that does not end when the course is over; ideally becoming a continual resource as they work towards their personal goals.  Over 85% of our students return for additional training!

Our courses are family friendly!  No boot camp mentality!

You won’t find inflated egos or foul language coming from the staff.  Instead, we strive to foster a learning environment that is open and welcoming to people of all walks of life and skill levels.  Courses are family friendly with the minimum age required to attend set at 13 with adult participation.  Custom courses are available for the entire family where there is no age restrictions.

  • We were lucky to find Jerry who does all sorts of courses on survival and outdoor cooking and who managed to do a custom course for us and the kids. The kids enjoyed the course greatly and so did we as it was a nice family day out. Thank you!Emmanuelle, UK

  • I've attended several courses under Jerry Ward at Ozark Mountain Preparedness. I just got back from a five day custom course in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains. We tracked, harvested, and ate small game. Jerry taught me how to ID numerous useful trees and edible plants. We made fire multiple ways, located water and made the water safe to drink. I learned how to navigate through thick brush and mountainous terrain using a map and compass. We also made a simple shelter that reflected fire and stayed at a warm temperature throughout the cool night. I encourage anyone who wants to learn how to survive, trap, or stay in the wilderness for any length of time to attend a course under Jerry–Chris, Missouri

  • Jerry truly can put to practice what he preaches.  It only takes a few minutes around him for his passion for teaching and learning to be passed on.  Jerry is a man of faith who is truly in his element in the out-of-doors.  His teaching style is hands-on with a common-sense approach for application and use–Dr. Matt Summers - Outdoors writer for Currents magazine

  • We learned a tremendous amount and are re-evaluating our emergency kits plus planning on taking some trips into the local forest to determine what works in our area.  We enjoyed the class and hope to attend more.–Mark & Susan, Colorado

  • Hi Jerry, Just a note to say how much I enjoyed and learned from this course. You are an excellent communicator and teacher backed by real life experience. The camp area you chose was a super choice with the water and rock overhang.  I hope to return again sometime for another course–Doug, Arkansas

  • Brogan and I had just an awesome time this past weekend on the Autumn Ozark Scout trip – what a blast and memories for Brogan that will last a lifetime!!!  I appreciate what you are about and how you conduct your classes, a real educational time, fun, and a great testimony in the process.  God Bless you Jerry and we’ll look forward to our next adventure.–Kurt, Kansas

  • After watching the instructor in action, and seeing the satisfaction on student's faces, it's safe to say that OMP's classes are informative and well organized.  At many such schools, instructors teach "magic shows" to showcase their skills.  That's not the case with OMP and Jerry Ward–Joe Flowers, in The New Pioneer magazine

  • I have just recently completed the Basic Fur Trapping course offered at OMP.  Jerry is truly a master woodsman in his own element.  He not only takes the time to explain everything to the smallest detail but demonstrates his crafts and skills in a manner that you become a part of the training with actual hands on trap setting in his own training compound.  I am looking forward to taking some additional training courses offered by OMP in the future–Jim, Arkansas

  • I want to thank-you for being such a great instructor and I know that I learned a lot just from those three days out with you in the field.  You will definitely see me back out with you in the future and I look forward to it.–Tony, Arkansas
